I had to redo the insulation in my unfinished basement due to a fairly serious mold problem. I had fiberglass batts put in the walls and rock wool in the overhead (with sheets of a breathable plastic over it). I chose the rock wool because of:Mineral wool (rock wool is one brand name) is great. Save the spray foam for the tricky bits.
- its resiliency to moisture
- the fact that the bsmt is unheated - No walking on cold first floor floors in the winter.
- its soundproofing qualities. I run a pretty big dehumidifier in the basement and the rock wool deadens the sound nicely
Rock wool isn’t right for every application but it has worked for me.
