My husband’s employer only offered an HMO plan when our first went out of state to college. I contacted the insurance company in advance to ask how college students are covered, and the coverage was actually good. For example, she had a situation that required an MRI. It took some finagling, but we were able to get approval for the procedure despite it not being an emergency. My advice is to contact the insurer to discuss coverage for college students away from home. If your employer has a good HR department, they may be able to answer questions, as well.
