Back to the original post...
The initial post lays out the problem pretty accurately from a consumer's perspective, with 1 exception: concern that R-410A coolant will become scarce in the future. It will be available for a very long time. I wouldn't let that sway the decision.
Many of us were faced with the same decision in 2024. Some of us did the replacement this year because of concerns over the increased costs for the new technology and preferring not to be on the leading edge.I need a new A/C system although my current one might make it through the rest of summer. I have a 14 year old unit with a slowly leaking evaporator coil so probably not worth just replacing the coil at that age. It's my understanding that R-410A units will not be manufactured after Jan. 1 2025 because of switching to more environmentally friendly refrigerant. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of buying an R-410 now vs. waiting for new refrigerants. I hear the newer units could be 20-30% higher in cost although I'm not 100% certain they will be. The downside of buying a R-410A system now would be scarcity of R410-A in the future with potentially high costs if needed. Was wondering if anyone here had to make this decision recently and what you decided.
