We bought Tesla’s 18-inch tire and wheel package for our Tesla 3 Long Range because we do reasonably regular midwestern trips throughout the year. The Pirelli Sottozero 3 winter tires Tesla sells are not EV-specific.
There is a noticeable drop in efficiency and range compared to the OEM Michelin tires, but the improvement in cold weather stopping distances is worth it to us. As a practical matter, we need to top up at a Supercharger for about 10 minutes on our regular 350-mile journey. With the winter tires (and cooler weather) it’s more like 15-20 minutes - noticeable, but not a deal-breaker.
Many folks like tires like the Michelin Cross Climate, which seek to be a good compromise between traditional all-season tires and proper winter tires. Knowing we were driving on rubber made for winter roads was worth the minor hassle of swapping wheels twice a year and the cost of buying the extra wheels and tires.
