First, ignore the word "hedge" in the name. They invest in a wide variety of things, with a wide variety of strategies. Many do not hedge anything. All they have in common is a structure and a payment scheme.

Some investors want what certain hedge funds offer. I cannot say the logic persuades me, but there are investors who want aggressive bets on something and the funds can deliver that. Some want to know how the fund will pursue those goals. If you believe in active management, or at least in favoring a particular perceived anomaly or factor, then you can find a hedge that will chase it. If you have enough money.
