We were in Portugal for a couple of weeks three years ago, I will go back with no hesitation.
My thoughts:
Do not rent a car. Not worth the hassle when public transportation (especially between cities) is so efficient. We rode buses and trams while in Lisbon, no regrets.
Lisbon and Porto are very walkable cities.
I second the recommendation for the tile museum, it made me (the miser I am) buy painted tiles. We still use them as coasters and decorations, and enjoy them.
We stayed in an apartment near the center in Lisbon, there were (super) markets and bakeries near by.We learned to eat breakfast like the locals, order a "nata" and "bica" at the counter, down them at a stand-up table and move on.
