Travel insurance isn't health insurance. It will cover only basic stuff and probably evacuation (depending on policy). For instance if you are diagnosed with Cancer your travel insurance isn't going to cover it. I don't believe travel insurance covers hospital stay either. Also the maximum duration for most travel policies is 30-31 days and i'll be gone for a couple months.

I looked at Nationwide Travel insurance it states that coverage is secondary to a health policy for Medical coverage but it isn't clear if a health policy is required or if this functions as primary in the absence of any primary policy.
I think if its cancer, and you need more immediate but not emergency care, you travel back to Texas. What concerns me is an emergency room visit that turns into an inpatient admission or requires more immediate follow up care. Then the answers become more vague.

I recall a forum member who had recommended a travel insurance agency. Maybe they'll see this and chime in. I would think they would offer policies in the domestic market. Medicare eligibles who travel internationally face this all the time and the recommendation is to buy travel insurance.
