I know you didn’t want this answer, but just sign for him and say incapacitated. Of course, if DIY electronic submittal, just submit it since no written signature required. Does anyone think the IRS aid going to complain, assuming they somehow found out? An you imagine the headline: IRS charges wife of person who cannot move or speak over not properly signing their 1040.
I believe the CPA would be filing it electronically and there may be something she has to certify that both spouses agree. Whatever the case, file and attach the statement that says "spouse is incapacitated and unable to give consent. I know he / she would authorize me to sign her name."
You are putting it in the hands of the IRS which probably will not even scrutinize to this level but you have told the truth.
