I wrote the above a little over a year ago, how things change. Without going into the medical issues which took hold, its go into one now where I have a choice or wait until further deterioration. Once you can't walk, choices are limited. I had dinner with friends who chose the one I am going to and I was talking about downsizing and what to take and parting with things that have been part of my life for decades. His comment was "how much do you need, we've come here to die."We feel similar to Mr. Rumples, but we recently started looking in an area like you describe. The 55+ neighborhood itself, only 1 person must be over 55 and everyone in the house must just be over 18, so we didn't see only older people in the area. And right across the main road and down the street are regular neighborhoods. We are strongly considering this type of setup. Some are mixed communities, where a section of the neighborhood is 55+ and another section is all ages. As a commenter noted above, there is a lot of variety in options. Not for me. I want to be around folks of all ages.
I'll be one of the youngest. And I admit being surrounded by older folks more may not be ideal, but my friends are my age or older and I can get out, drive - at least now - and get to a gym - again, at least now.
