On a point to point measure. Over other selective periods it could be flipped around.

The 1970's wasn't too great for stock - but were good for gold, similar for the 2000's.
1980's and 1990's were good for stocks, not good for gold.
Talking about gold in the 1970's is meaningless, it wasn't even legal to own in the US until 1974. Furthermore the price of gold had been fixed in dollars at the start of the decade and was artificially low, of course it was going to be a good decade for gold once the dollar was allowed to float.
