Note that ETFs such as BND are preferred over mutual funds like VBTLX in taxable accounts so you don't pay taxes on dividends. In tax deferred accounts, it doesn't matter.

I assume you didn't mean BND? I don't see why BND would get anyone out of paying taxes on dividends.
I am mistaken. You still get dividends with BND. For stocks, ETFs are preferred over mutual funds in taxable accounts.
Unless they're Vanguard funds right? It's my understanding that Vanguard mutual funds, especially those that have a corresponding ETF share class, are equally efficient in a taxable account when compared to the Vanguard ETF.
